Who Adolfo Suárez was
He came out of the Francoist apparatus — he had run Spanish state television and been secretary of the Movement — and was appointed president in 1976 amid general scepticism.
In three years he legalised the Communist Party, called free elections and carried the 1978 Constitution. He resigned in 1981, weeks before the 23-F coup attempt, during which he stayed seated in his bench while shots were fired.
