Who Astor Piazzolla was
He grew up in New York, where his father gave him a bandoneón at eight. He played with Aníbal Troilo and studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, who told him to stop hiding the tango underneath classical music.
His nuevo tango — with fugue, with dissonance, with electric instruments — was violently rejected by traditional Argentine tango for decades. He is now the most performed Argentine composer in the world.
