Who Johann Sebastian Bach was
Orphaned at ten, he trained by copying scores in secret by moonlight. He was an organist and cantor, never a celebrity: he was regarded as a competent and rather old-fashioned craftsman.
The "St Matthew Passion", the "Well-Tempered Clavier" and "The Art of Fugue" were rediscovered in the nineteenth century, and he has been the floor Western music stands on ever since. The date here is Gregorian; in the Julian calendar Thuringia then used it was 21 March.
