Who Miguel de Cervantes was
He lost the use of his left hand at Lepanto and spent five years captive in Algiers after being taken by corsairs. He was a tax collector and went to prison over accounts that did not add up.
He published the first part of "Don Quixote" at fifty-seven. It is the first modern novel and remains the most translated book after the Bible. His birth date is not recorded: his baptism on 9 October is, and he is presumed born on Saint Michael's day.
