Who Akira Kurosawa was
He trained as a painter before entering film as an assistant director. "Rashomon" (1950) won the Golden Lion at Venice and opened Japanese cinema to the West at a stroke.
"Seven Samurai" rewrote the grammar of the action film, and its structure has been reused from westerns to superhero movies. He adapted Shakespeare twice — "Throne of Blood", "Ran" — and also Gorky and Dostoevsky.
