Who Camarón de la Isla was
José Monje Cruz sang in the inns of San Fernando as a child. Between 1969 and 1977 he recorded nine albums with Paco de Lucía on guitar that are, for many, the canon of twentieth-century cante.
"La leyenda del tiempo" (1979), with Lorca lyrics and a rock band behind it, was rejected by flamenco orthodoxy and is now regarded as the record that opened the door to everything after. He died of lung cancer at forty-one.
