Who Carlos Saura was
A photographer before a filmmaker, under Franco he made a coded cinema that the censors let through and audiences understood. "The Hunt" (1966) is an allegory of the civil war shot as a day's shooting party.
"Cría Cuervos" and "Ana and the Wolves" belong to that period. He later devoted decades to musical cinema — his flamenco trilogy with Antonio Gades — and returned to photography in his final years.
