Who Chavela Vargas was
Born in Costa Rica, she left for Mexico at seventeen. She sang rancheras dressed as a man, in a red poncho and carrying a gun, in a genre that was male territory, and stripped the mariachi songs down to voice and guitar.
She disappeared for fifteen years to alcoholism and returned at seventy-three, championed by Pedro Almodóvar, who used her voice in several films. She came out publicly as a lesbian at eighty-one.
