Who Clara Campoamor was
She began studying at thirty-two while working, and qualified in law at thirty-six. She was among Spain's first women lawyers.
A deputy in the constituent Cortes of 1931, she defended women's suffrage against much of her own party and against Victoria Kent, who feared women would vote conservative. She won the vote. She lost her seat in 1933 and went into exile in 1936; she died in Lausanne without returning.
