Who Eckhart Tolle was
He had an unhappy childhood in post-war Germany and a long depression until, at twenty-nine, he had an experience he describes as the end of identification with his own thinking. He spent two years sitting on park benches.
"The Power of Now" (1997) took years to circulate and went on to sell millions. His teaching is a single thing: suffering lives in psychological time, and the present is all there is.
