Who Emilia Pardo Bazán was
A countess, polyglot and self-taught — she could not enrol at university — she introduced Zola's naturalism to Spain with "The Burning Question", which brought her scandal and separation from her husband.
"The House of Ulloa" is her major novel. She was the first woman professor at the Central University and the first woman to chair the Ateneo's literature section, and the Academy refused her a seat three times.
