Who José Martí was
Sentenced to hard labour at sixteen over a letter, he went into exile in Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela and New York.
He is at once the founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and one of the originators of literary modernism in Spanish. "Our America" is still the essay that best formulates the difference between Latin America and the North. He died in combat four months into the war he had organised.
