Who José Mujica was
He was a Tupamaro guerrilla, was shot six times, escaped from prison twice and spent fourteen years in jail, two of them at the bottom of a well.
He was president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015, gave away most of his salary, went on living on his smallholding and driving a Volkswagen Beetle. Under his government Uruguay legalised same-sex marriage, abortion and cannabis.
