Who León Tolstói was
A count and landowner, he served in Crimea and returned to his estate to write. "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" took him fifteen years between them.
He then renounced his own work and his class, became a Christian pacifist and anarchist, and was excommunicated. His doctrine of non-resistance to evil by violence reached Gandhi by letter. He died in a railway station, fleeing his own house at eighty-two.
