Who Luis García Berlanga was
He enlisted in the Blue Division to save his father, sentenced to death as a republican. That origin explains much of his humour.
"Welcome, Mr Marshall", "Plácido" and "The Executioner" are satires that scraped past the censors — the last was denounced as a pamphlet by the regime at Venice. His long takes with twenty people talking at once are a trademark.
