Who Rigoberta Menchú was
She lost her father, her mother and a brother to Guatemalan army repression during the civil war. She went into exile in Mexico in 1981.
Her testimony, recorded in 1983, brought the genocide against the Maya peoples to international attention. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992, the quincentenary year, at thirty-three. She ran twice for the presidency of Guatemala.
