His family moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong when he was five and he did not speak Cantonese; he spent his childhood in cinemas with his mother. He shoots without a closed script, writing during production.
"Chungking Express", "Happy Together" and "In the Mood for Love" build a cinema of unconsummated desire and lost time, with Christopher Doyle's cinematography an inseparable part of the signature.
