He was identified at two as the reincarnation of the thirteenth Dalai Lama and enthroned at four. He assumed political authority at fifteen, in the midst of the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
He fled to India in 1959 and has lived in Dharamsala since. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In 2011 he renounced all political function, breaking a tradition of nearly four centuries, and devotes his work to dialogue between Buddhism and neuroscience.
