Who Fiódor Dostoievski was
He was sentenced to death at twenty-seven for belonging to a socialist circle, reprieved before the firing squad and sent to Siberia for four years. That experience runs through everything he wrote afterwards.
"Crime and Punishment", "The Idiot", "Demons" and "The Brothers Karamazov" build a psychology of guilt and freedom that both Nietzsche and Freud read closely. He wrote much of his work against the clock to pay gambling debts.
