Who Franz Kafka was
He worked all his adult life at a workers' accident insurance institute and wrote at night. He published very little in his lifetime and asked his friend Max Brod to burn the rest; Brod did not.
"The Metamorphosis", "The Trial" and "The Castle" named an experience — the Kafkaesque — that did not exist before him: a faceless bureaucracy whose logic cannot be argued with. He died of tuberculosis at forty.
