Who Gabriela Mistral was
Lucila Godoy was a rural schoolteacher before a poet, and pedagogy was her other vocation: Mexico called her in to reform its education system, and schools across the continent bear her name.
She won the Nobel in 1945, the first Latin American to receive it. "Desolación", "Ternura" and "Tala" are a more austere and harder body of work than her reputation as a poet for children suggests.
