Who Ludwig Wittgenstein was
Heir to one of Austria's great fortunes, he gave all of it away. He wrote the "Tractatus" in the trenches of the First World War, believed he had solved every problem of philosophy, and went off to teach in village schools.
He returned to Cambridge and demolished his own book: the "Philosophical Investigations", published after his death, hold that meaning is use. Few philosophers have refuted their major work with another of equal importance.
