Who Karl Marx was
A doctor of philosophy at twenty-three, an academic career was closed to him by his politics and he lived off journalism and Engels' support. He was expelled from Prussia, France and Belgium before settling in London.
"The Communist Manifesto" (1848) he wrote with Engels at twenty-nine. "Capital" took him twenty years and he left two volumes unfinished. No nineteenth-century author has had more direct political consequence.
