Who José Ortega y Gasset was
He trained in Germany and came back determined that Spain should have a philosophy of its own, written in readable Castilian. He founded the Revista de Occidente and published in the press all his life.
"I am I and my circumstance" sums up his ratiovitalism. "The Revolt of the Masses" (1930) remains his most disputed book. He went into exile during the civil war and returned in 1945 to a Spain that was no longer his.
