Who Jean-Jacques Rousseau was
He was an engraver's apprentice, a footman, a music copyist and an opera composer before winning, at thirty-seven, the Dijon Academy competition that made him famous.
"The Social Contract" and "Emile" changed European politics and pedagogy; the second was burned in Paris and in Geneva. The "Confessions" invented modern autobiography. He gave his five children to a foundling hospital, a fact he reported himself.
