Who Judith Butler was
They studied philosophy at Yale and came to thinking about gender from Hegel and phenomenology, not from cultural studies.
"Gender Trouble" (1990) proposed that gender is performative — something done rather than something one is — and reorganised academic feminism for the following three decades. They have also written on violence, mourning and non-violence, and on the conflict in Israel and Palestine.
