Who Niels Bohr was
His 1913 model of the atom applied quanta to atomic structure and at last explained the hydrogen spectrum. He received the Nobel in 1922.
His Copenhagen institute was the centre of twentieth-century physics, and his arguments with Einstein over whether "God plays dice" are the founding debate of quantum mechanics. He escaped occupied Denmark in a fishing boat in 1943.
