Who Yalal ad-Din Rumi was
His family fled the Mongol advance when he was a child and settled in Konya. He was already a respected jurist and preacher when he met the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz, an encounter that transformed him and out of which his poetry came.
The "Masnavi" runs to twenty-five thousand verses. The order of whirling dervishes was founded by his disciples out of his practice. He is today one of the best-selling poets in the United States, eight hundred years later.
