Who Sigmund Freud was
He was a neurologist and reached the unconscious by way of hysteria and hypnosis. "The Interpretation of Dreams" (1899) founded a discipline and took eight years to sell out its first edition.
He invented a vocabulary — repression, transference, the unconscious — used today far outside any consulting room. He fled Vienna in 1938 after the Nazi annexation and died in London the following year.
