Who Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was
She learned to read at three and asked to be disguised as a man so she could enter university. She entered a convent because it was the only place a woman could study, and assembled a library of four thousand volumes.
Her "Reply to Sister Filotea" is a defence of women's right to knowledge written in 1691. Pressed by the Church hierarchy, she sold her library and stopped writing. She died nursing her sisters through an epidemic.
