Who Violeta Parra was
She travelled the Chilean countryside recording elderly singers and collected more than three thousand songs that would otherwise have been lost. That work of collection underlies everything that followed in committed Latin American song.
She was also an embroiderer and painter: her arpilleras were shown at the Louvre in 1964, the first Latin American to exhibit there solo. She wrote "Gracias a la vida" shortly before taking her own life at her tent in La Reina.
