Who Emmy Noether was
She taught for seven years unpaid and under Hilbert's name, because Göttingen would not admit women lecturers. Hilbert asked the faculty whether this was a university or a bathhouse.
Her theorem ties every symmetry of a physical system to a conservation law, and is one of the deepest results in theoretical physics. She also founded modern abstract algebra. She fled to the United States in 1933 and died two years later.
