Who Erwin Schrödinger was
His 1926 equation is the basis of wave quantum mechanics and won him the Nobel in 1933. The cat shut in with the poison was an argument against the dominant interpretation, not an illustration of it: it is the worst-understood joke in physics.
"What Is Life?" (1944) proposed that heredity had to be written in an aperiodic molecule, and Watson and Crick cited that book as what set them on their way.
