Who Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was
He finished the "Phenomenology of Spirit" on the eve of the battle of Jena, and watched Napoleon ride into the city: he called him "the world spirit on horseback".
His dialectic — that a thing contains its opposite, and that conflict is what moves history — marked Marx, existentialism and much of the twentieth century. His prose is among the hardest ever written, and not by accident: he held that the form of thought cannot be separated from its content.
