Who Gregor Mendel was
He failed the science teaching examination twice. He grew some twenty-eight thousand pea plants in his monastery garden in Brno over eight years and counted every seed.
He published his laws in 1866 and nobody took any notice: they were rediscovered in 1900, sixteen years after his death. He was made abbot, and administration consumed the rest of his scientific life.
