Who Juan de la Cruz was
He worked as a hospital nurse in Medina del Campo before entering the Carmelite order. With Teresa of Ávila he drove the Discalced reform, and for it his own brothers in religion jailed him for nine months in Toledo.
In that cell he composed much of the "Spiritual Canticle" from memory. His work — "Dark Night", "Living Flame of Love" — is among the highest poetry written in Spanish, and his explanatory prose is as demanding as the verse.
