Who Martin Buber was
He was raised by his grandfather, a scholar of Hasidism, and spent years collecting and translating the Hasidic tales that were disappearing.
"I and Thou" (1923) distinguishes two ways of being in the world: treating the other as an object or as a Thou, and holds that only in the second is there encounter. He fled Germany in 1938 and in Israel argued for a binational state, a position that isolated him.
