Who Papus was
Gérard Encausse was born in A Coruña to a French father and a Spanish mother, and grew up in Paris from the age of four. He practised as a physician all his life.
"The Tarot of the Bohemians" (1889) is the book that tied tarot to the kabbalistic tree of life and to astrology, and is the basis of most of what followed. He founded the Martinist Order and died tending the wounded in a military hospital during the First World War.
