Who Simone de Beauvoir was
She was the youngest person to pass the French philosophy agrégation, at twenty-one, placing second behind Sartre on a jury that argued at length over which of the two was the real philosopher.
"The Second Sex" (1949) is the founding book of second-wave feminism: "one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman". She also wrote novels, four volumes of memoirs, and an essay on old age that remains one of very few.
