Who Zygmunt Bauman was
He fled Poland for the USSR in 1939, fought in the Polish army, and was stripped of his Warsaw chair by the antisemitic campaign of 1968. He settled in Leeds.
"Liquid Modernity" (2000) named what many people were living without being able to say it: an age in which bonds, work and identity have stopped having a fixed shape. He also wrote about the Holocaust as a product of modernity rather than an interruption of it.
